The word ‘unacceptable’ is too small to express the intensity of this heinous crime. The vicious circle of Domestic Violence has engulfed many innocent lives and still many homes are becoming the silent witness of this crime. The domestic violence and abuses against women is increasing at a remarkable rate and we the citizens of the great America are standing like useless dumb hypocrites.
We all know that US is fighting a so called ‘war against Terror’ and there is so much violence in Iraq. But the intensity and impact of domestic violence is much graver than the useless and never-ending war in Iraq. I have heard many leaders say that domestic violence is unacceptable in the United States, but the fact is that we all are hypocrites. We don’t wait for a second before condemning the violence in Iraq or anywhere else, but we forget about the scenario within our own country. Being a citizen of such a great Country sometimes I wonder if USA stands for United States of America or United States of Abusers.
WE like any other country are also a male dominated nation and the US legislature advocates a provision for Equal rights for both men and women, even there is a provision of many effective laws especially for women. But still our female counterparts tolerate the hellish behaviour from their male counterparts.
A recent research points out that 1 out of every 10 families in the US suffer from this serious crime. The number of women dying every year due to such abuse is also on the rise and the statistics are indeed thought-provoking. The number of incidents of Domestic violence including sexual, emotional, psychological, financial or physical abuses is increasing for many years. And we are saying that it is just unacceptable. Is that all? Now, who is to blame for this?
Many women don’t complain about this type of domestic abuse as they fear that it could ruin their married life. Should we blame these women? Or the ever-increasing alcoholism and drug abuse are responsible for this? The DV has been a blot on the great culture of our great country and we have ourselves to blame for that.
However, the blame game is not going to help us, what would help is a deep introspection and a pledge to eradicate this evil. It needs an honest approach from our side to save our dying culture. Let’s start from our own home and remove this blot from the fair name of our country. Only then we will be eligible to say that ‘Domestic Violence is Unacceptable in the United States.’
