With news about the prediction of recession spreading like wild fire, most of the people are worried about how it is going to affect them. No one is quite sure of how long the recession will last and how badly will it hit them. The middle class would be the worst affected by it. Though there is nothing anyone can do to escape recession but there are number of things which can be done to reduce the effects of the recession. This is a period where people must use their intelligence instead of panicking in order to survive this tough phase of life.

1) Less grocery shopping: Buy only those things that are needed. Instead of buying your grocery for a month you can reduce to buying for a week at once. Also to spend your money economically, look out for sale.

3) Reduce spending: Stop buying useless things. Reduce your consumption of alcohols, cigarettes and any other kinds of drinks. Reduce partying and hanging out with friends. As far as possible avoid using credit cards as it could lead you to pay more.
4) Food expenses: Avoid eating outside as eating at home is much healthier and cheaper. Stick to eating vegetables and reduce your consumption of meat.
5) Save fuel: As far as possible avoid using your car. Instead you can a bicycle or walk on foot to nearby destinations. Using the public bus can also save much of the amount being spent on fuel. If at all you have to use your car then check out the routes to cut short the distance between your location and the destination. As far as possible avoid over cooking with your gas. In short do not waste your gas.
6) Save money on utilities: Household utilities are one of the primary things that consume a large part of your expenditure. So cut down the expenses by turning off the lights during the day. Avoid plugging in all the electrical appliances to the switch board unnecessarily. Take bath with your young children together. Do not leave the water running.
7) Low medical expenses: As far as possible try to stay healthy and away from any illness. If at all you fall sick then let your doctor prescribe generic medications.
8) Clothing expenses: Reduce the expenses on clothing. Try to make use of all that you have and as far as possible avoid buying new clothes. If at all you must buy then look out for sale or go for cheaper clothes.
9) Household goods expenses: Use rechargeable batteries. To make your batteries last longer you can keep it in freeze. If something goes wrong stick to do-it-yourself methods as long as you can manage.
10) Entertainment expenses: Stop buying magazines and books, instead go to library. Online newspaper is another option.
Other than the points listed above, one of the most important thing to be done is to hold on to your job. Protect your job no matter what. Though you can not be very sure about how long you can hold onto it but clutch it as long as you can. However you must be prepared for the worst to come up. Look out for ways to save money, in short make hay while the sun shines. Instead of spending much of your time watching TV you can think of something creative that is productive. For instance, you can make something at home and sell it to fetch money. Another good source of income is investing money in a more profitable way.
