Victims of verbal abuse
Women at large have always been the victim of verbal abuse. And children seeing their mothers being abused by the male authority, they are victimized. In each and every household we see, husbands and fathers, exercising their full superiority, shouting at the top of his voice with full authority to their children and wife, which silences the whole atmosphere.
Not only these, even women literally abuse women and further deepen the anxiety and frustration that the entire womanhood suffers. Very frequently, we see mothers maltreating, ridiculing and scorning their daughters when they do not hear them or go unaddressed. This leads us to think as to what is wrong with us.
Though, there are no visible scars that can be noticed physically but the scar that has wounded the soul even does not go unnoticed. We tend to overlook the sufferings and devastation that is caused within us and tolerate it. And pretend, as if, we are strong and not hurt by the words but one does not need to utter a word to let others know that we are being victimized verbally. It is so intense that our face and eyes reflect it all.
Though, there are reported occurrences of verbal and emotional abuse of men but statically, women and children are mostly the victims. Simple words that cause shame, blame, threat, criticism, disgrace, humiliation, degrade, inflict a wound in the soul, silently attacking the self worth of the individual, without any visible bruises. Withholding love and affection, also contributes to the mutilation of an individual’s being.
Being subjected to all these, we fail to judge the situation realistically. We begin to blame ourselves for the abuse as we are emotionally being beaten down. Our self esteem becomes so low, and we are convinced of our worthlessness, that we fear of leaving the abuser. And this, leads to the victim’s self confidence; trust in their own perceptions, self concept, and sense of self worthiness, eventually, being washed away.
Women are vulnerable to abuses and those who are already being abused display a pattern of behavior like depression, walking around on egg shells trying to prevent occurrences of fresh abuse, blaming herself for the abuse etc., children may show signs destructive behavior, withdrawal and poor social development that may harness the psychological and emotional development of the child.
The only way to free ourselves and to overcome these fears is to confront oneself with our unconscious self. We can easily stop it, only if we can separate from the abusing self but since this is not possible, we need to muster up a lot of courage, and commitment to ourselves. We must build up enough courage to face the hostility and bullying tactics. To go for a therapy would be an added advantage for those who are committed, courageous and who want to learn to free themselves.
